Description

Caption reads: "Recommendations. The retention of the existing on site buildings depends on: - their compatibility with the park "waterspace" emphasis - their ability to provide space for an appropriate park activity (one in keeping with the waterscape emphasis) at a saving over the provision of a new structure designed for a specific purpose. The indoor activities considerd for Jericho are: - physical recreation and training - activities which can be associated with the waterfront, complementing the attraction of the foreshore and extending its use over longer hours, in all seasons and weather. To retain the park emphasis on waterscape adn water edge activity, any land related physical and recreational activities should be centered around the four units of hangars 7 and 8, reserving the steel hangars along the foreshore for possible public gatherings and water related activities. With careful landscape treatment, the impact of 7 and 8 on the park can be reduced. It is possible to use the foreshore hangars to provide space for these large scale public gatherings and events traditionally associated with the water edge. For this purpose hangar 5 is preferred because of its central location on the foreshore. The use of the other hangars, 3 and 6, in their waterfront location is difficult to justify for similar events. They are essentially large storage sheds, but the Sailing groups have repeatedly denied the need for expensive covered storage. Because of their size, extensive renovations are expensive. Special purpose sports facilities such as gymnasium space, with a wood floor, adequate heating and lighting could be built to an appropriate size (with less height) at an equivalent cost to renovation of a waterfront hangar, on a site adjacent to hangars 7 and 8. Since hangars 3 and 6 when taken together with 5, dominate the foreshore, their impact on the park cannot be easily reduced. Since the removal of hangars 3 and 6 greatly eases the congestion on the foreshore they are not included in plans for park development."
